Founding publisher of Thomas Allen Publishers Patrick Crean has joined HarperCollins Canada to oversee his own imprint, Patrick Crean Editions, which will publish between eight and 12 titles per year with a focus on Canadian literary fiction and non-fiction. “In these perilous times in publishing, editorial is under such siege by corporatism to produce, to make a profit,” Crean told Quill & Quire. “Of course, HarperCollins is that, but they really and truly seem to be devoted to the editorial function and understand it, and that’s what drew me there.” HarperCollins Canada publisher and editor-in-chief Iris Tupholme said the launch […]

Macmillan and 21st Century Publishing House have joined forces on a new children’s publishing venture in China, Macmillan Century Consulting & Service Company Ltd. Tampa bookstore Inkwood Books is the latest well-known indie to search for new ownership. (RJ Julia Booksellers in Connecticut and The Book Stall in Illinois are among others looking for buyers.) Alive Communications’ start-up sister company, the epublisher Bondfire Books, has hired Patton Dodd from Patheos.com to become executive editor. Founder Rick Christian says that “burgeoning sales and opportunity” since their soft launch in May drove the hire. As of Spring 2013, the Potter Style imprint at Clarkson Potter will expand its scope to encompass interior design, style, and wedding books in addition to the gift books already published by the imprint.
