A lengthy feature in USA Today looks at Little, Brown’s publicity and promotion plans for JK Rowling’s upcoming novel for adults THE CASUAL VACANCY. Rowling will appear in public in the US just once, on October 16, when she will be in conversation with Ann Patchett at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall, with ticket prices ranging between $37 and $44 (including a hardcover copy of the book) though booksellers will be able to live-stream the event as well. In addition, Flinn Gillan has joined the School & Library Marketing group as marketing assistant. Previously he was a marketing coordinator at Garland Science. Briefs: Harper Will Convert DIESEL Books Into Temporary Record Store To Promote Chabon Novel; Nook Device Prices Drop; And More

As part of its extensive marketing campaign for Michael Chabon’s forthcoming novel TELEGRAPH AVENUE, Harper will convert the Oakland branch of California independent Diesel Books into Brokeland Records — which is the record store co-owned by the main characters in Chabon’s book — between September 7 and 14, the WSJ reports. The store, which will host the launch party for TELEGRAPH AVENUE on September 12, “will sell used jazz records provided by an independent record dealer named Berigan Taylor” and Harper is creating exterior Brokeland Records signage and merchandise. Screenwriter, filmmaker and author Nora Ephron, 71, died Tuesday night in a Manhattan hospital from complications of the blood disorder myelodysplasia, diagnosed six years ago. She was equally known for writing and directing films such as SILKWOOD (1983) WHEN HARRY MET SALLY (1989) and, most recently, JULIE AND JULIA (2009) as she was for her journalism and books, among them the novel HEARTBURN (1983) and essay collections CRAZY SALAD (1975), I FEEL BAD ABOUT MY NECK (2006), and I REMEMBER NOTHING (2010). “She brought an awful lot of people a tremendous amount of joy,” Ephron’s longtime publisher Knopf said in […]
